It
is a known fact that we either have a competitive edge to our personalities or
we do not.
Contests are
entered into every single aspect of our lives and starts off as early as
nursery school, or even earlier. Children in families vie for the attention of
their parents within a home from the very minute they are born and when they
enter into kindergarten they vie for the attention of their teachers. What's the prize?
Contests
are also found everywhere in the animal kingdom when the birds and mammals vie
for the affections of a mate during the mating season, thus displaying brilliantly-coloured
plumage, exude strange and exotic scents, make unusual mating calls and more.
Many mammals fight to the death to win the affections of a mate, with the loser
skulking off, feelings hurt.
It
is therefore not surprising that there are those of us that will always have
the edge of competition in our personalities and love to enter into a
competitive environment or feel that most things in life is all about the
contest and perhaps the win as an end result. In other words there are the
leaders and there are the followers.
The
Olympics is an outstanding example of how sportsmen and sportswomen participate
in a contest involving every conceivable sport from swimming to hockey, throwing
of the discus and the javelin and more. The ultimate aim is of course, winning the
gold medal of at the end of this grueling and epic contest.
Life
as a whole is one big contest. We are in competition with our peers at school,
in the playground and on the sports field. And when it comes to interacting
socially it is always thought that the prettiest girls and the handsomest young
men will win this contest hands down.
Contests make the
world go round, and with no competitive edge there is no inspiration to win and
do your best.
