INTERESTING FACTS

This is without a doubt the most unique piece of engineering that this world has to offer- a man made island.

The reason why it was created, Dubai- the largest touristy attracting country, was running out of a beachfront.

Here is an interesting fact- the eight wonder produced problems from the word go.

While they were constructing the Palm Jumeirah, there was a serious storm which nearly washed the foundations away.

The first step in 2001 was to create part of the crescent-shaped breakwater to protect the work from rough seas.

This whole island is created from sand. Unfortunately the sand in the desert was too thin so they collected a more course sand from the ocean.

This machine that they used to transport the sand from the ocean to the construction site, works at such an intense speed that it could fill an Olympic sized swimming pool in 40minutes.

As soon as this problem was delt with another one appeared- "How do we created this palm shape?"

EASY...

Dubai is the only country in the world with its own satelite. This had to be used to construct the Palm as they had no other way to see the shape of the island, as none of the banks were straight lines. The irregular shape was monitored by the GPS (Global Positioning System) and more specifically, DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System).

"Engineers aboard boats and on foot used the system to check the accuracy of sand placement to within one centimetre of its target, ensuring every grain of sand was placed exactly where it was required. DGPS was also used in surveying the development site both underwater and on land, before, during and after its construction."
